The road everyone in the area knows
The Borman Expressway is the stretch of I-80/94 (it carries US 6 too) between the Illinois line at Munster and the Indiana Toll Road interchange in Lake Station. It’s named after Frank Borman, who was born in Gary and commanded Gemini 7 and Apollo 8.
It’s also one of the busiest roads in the state. A 2010 study counted about 163,912 vehicles a day on the section between Kennedy Avenue and Cline Avenue.
Heading east from the state line, the exits come in this order: Calumet Avenue, Indianapolis Boulevard, Kennedy Avenue, Cline Avenue, Burr Street, Grant Street, Broadway, I-65 and Central Avenue (a partial interchange), then US 6 in Lake Station.
When a car quits on the Borman
We buy cars near the Borman, not on it. If yours dies on the expressway, safety comes first, then getting it off the road. INDOT runs a free safety patrol, the Hoosier Helpers, on I-80/94 from mile 0 to 15.8. They can change a flat, fix a minor problem, give you enough fuel to reach a station, and call for help they can’t give themselves. Their number is 855-INDOT4U (463-6848).
Once the car is towed home or to a shop you use and you’ve decided it isn’t worth fixing, that’s where we come in. Our guide to what to do when your car breaks down on a Northwest Indiana highway walks through the whole sequence, including Indiana’s 24-hour rule for cars left on public property.
The Little Calumet runs close by
The expressway runs close to the Little Calumet River. In September 2008, after heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ike, a levee breach sent river water across every lane at Kennedy Avenue, nearly five feet deep under the overpass. The Borman stayed closed in both directions until September 17.
Pickup notes near the Borman
- Give the nearest exit and cross street. “Off the Grant Street exit, two blocks north” is exactly what the driver needs.
- Tell us where the car ended up. Your driveway, a shop lot or a friend’s place. The owner of the spot should know it’s leaving.
- No keys, no problem. Say so, and say if a wheel won’t turn after a crash.
What we buy near the Borman
Cars that broke down and aren’t worth fixing, cars with frame damage after a collision, cars that leak, and several junk cars at one address. Missing the title? We can still help. In Indiana the sale needs either the title or a BMV certificate of authority; tell us what papers you have and we’ll point you to the right one on the call.
