Where the leak is coming from
The color of the spot under the car tells you a lot. A piece of white cardboard left under the engine overnight makes it easy to read:
| Color on the cardboard | Usually | What it means for driving |
|---|---|---|
| Brown to black, slick | Engine oil | Watch the dipstick; low oil can ruin the engine |
| Green, orange or pink, sweet smell | Coolant | Overheating risk |
| Red or reddish brown | Transmission or power steering fluid | Shifting or steering trouble |
| Clear to yellowish, near a wheel | Brake fluid | Don’t drive it |
| Clear, no smell | Water from the A/C | Normal |
A slow oil drip from a valve cover gasket is a different story from a leak at the rear main seal, where the fix can mean pulling the transmission. The shop’s estimate is what turns a leak into a decision.
When a leak means it’s time to sell
A leak alone doesn’t make a car junk. It becomes a junk car question when:
- the repair estimate is more than you’d pay for the whole car today;
- the car needs oil added every few days just to stay running;
- a coolant leak has already caused overheating, and now there’s more wrong;
- the leak is one problem on a list that keeps growing.
At that point you can keep paying to top it up, or you can sell the car to Cash for Junk Cars Northwest Indiana as it is and be done with the spots on the driveway.
Keeping it off the ground until pickup
Until the car goes, slide a drip pan or a flattened cardboard box under the engine. Kitty litter soaks up fresh spots on concrete. None of that affects the offer; it just keeps your driveway cleaner for the days in between.
Don’t start the engine to “keep it healthy” if it’s losing oil fast. Let it sit.
Pickup day for a leaking car
Pickup is the same as for any other car we buy. We confirm the offer, the tow truck loads the car, you sign over the title (no title? Indiana needs a BMV certificate of authority instead, and we’ll talk it through on the call), and you’re paid at pickup. Take your plate off first; our guide to plates after selling a car in Indiana explains why.
Why not sell it privately?
You can. But a leaking car is a hard sell on Facebook Marketplace: buyers ask whether it runs, whether it’ll make it home, and who pays for the tow. Our comparison of selling a junk car on Facebook Marketplace or to a buyer lays out the trade.
