Gary’s main street, then south
Broadway is the main north-south street through downtown Gary. The city’s original East Side, West Side and South Side all fronted it, with Glen Park farther south along the same road. Today it carries State Road 53 between Gary and Merrillville.
Going south from the north end:
- The Gary Works gate. Broadway’s north end is a security gate at the main entrance to U.S. Steel’s Gary Works, just past the Indiana Toll Road interchange where State Road 53 officially ends.
- Downtown. Broadway passes under the South Shore Line, then crosses Fourth Avenue (westbound US 12/20) and Fifth Avenue (eastbound US 12/20).
- The Borman. An interchange with I-80/94.
- North of 33rd Avenue. A mostly wooded stretch.
- Ridge Road. A traffic light at what the state still calls old US 6.
- Merrillville. More houses from 73rd Avenue, then shops and a traffic light at US 30.
INDOT’s counts put the busiest part of the road between 35th Avenue and the Borman, with about 29,200 vehicles a day in 2010.
Pickup notes for Broadway
- Use the cross street. “Broadway and 45th” or “off Broadway near 73rd” gets the truck there faster.
- Say what kind of spot it is. Driveway, back of a lot, street parking or a garage.
- Avoid loading on the four-lane. Where there’s a side street or a driveway, the tow can load there instead of on Broadway itself.
- Keys and tires. No keys and flat tires are both fine. Tell us so the right truck comes.
What we buy along Broadway
Junk, wrecked and scrap cars in any running condition. Several cars at one address, cars with a bent frame or cars that leak oil. Missing the title? We can still help. In Indiana the sale needs either the title or a BMV certificate of authority; tell us what papers you have and we’ll point you to the right one on the call. We haul it away at our expense and pay you as it’s loaded.
Where Broadway meets the other roads we cover
Broadway is the spine that connects most of our area. It crosses Ridge Road in Gary, meets the Borman Expressway and runs through the downtown pair of US 12 and US 20. For Hobart, Lake Station and the lakefront towns, see the rest of our Northwest Indiana area.
